Medicare is a vital part of many seniors' lives, helping to cover the costs of health care as we age. However, the system can be complex, and many people have questions about how it works. This blog post will go over the basics of Medicare, including the different parts of Medicare, and how to choose the right plan for you.
What is Medicare? Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for individuals who are 65 or older. However, it also covers some younger people with certain disabilities and diseases.
The Different Parts of Medicare
Medicare is made up of four parts:
Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance): This covers hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance): This covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans): This is an alternative to
Original Medicare that's offered by private companies approved by Medicare. It often includes both Part A and Part B coverage, and usually includes Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D) as well.
Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): This helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. These plans are offered by insurance companies and other private companies approved by Medicare.
Choosing a Medicare Plan When you first enroll in Medicare, you'll need to decide between Original Medicare (Parts A and B) and a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C). Original Medicare is the traditional program offered directly through the federal government. It is a fee-for-service plan, meaning you pay a certain amount for each service you use. On the other hand, Medicare Advantage Plans are offered by private insurance companies contracted with Medicare. These plans often include additional benefits like vision, hearing, and dental coverage. They may also have different out-of-pocket costs and rules for how you get services.
If you choose Original Medicare, you may want to get a separate Medigap policy to help pay for costs that Original Medicare doesn't cover. If you want prescription drug coverage, you can join a separate Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.
